Mustangs
|
In March 2005 we adopted three mustangs from the Kit Carson National Forest:
They are (left to right) Charro (Black), Rosso (Italian for Red) and Savanna (old Spanish, meaning: >From The Open Plain<)
We are also gentling a mare and filly for another person who adopted them.

Midnight and Zelda left us on Wednesday, May 18. 05.
They went to their proud owner John who will complete their training. |
 |
Savanna gave birth to a beautiful healthy colt on May 17th at 5:00 AM. |
The mustangs will be with us for at least one year and then one or more will be available for purchase to approved homes.
Visit us again for updates on the mustangs training progress.
Please note that we do not recommend to leave halters on your horses!
These mustangs have been haltered while in a squeeze chute to assist the gentling process and they are under close supervision.

Update October 2005:We had a very busy summer, fencing, installing pipe irrigation, building arena, doing clinics etc.
So I decided to give the mustangs some time off to enjoy a leisurely life on the pasture.
Now that things are slowing down I asked my friend Dan Snow to help me train Rosso. Dan has been handling mustangs most of his life. I saw him working with a mustang stud colt and amazingly he had the horse saddled and was riding him within 45 minutes!
With Rosso though, he took a slower approach since Rosso is older and had already been a breeding stallion.

Here is Dan in the round pen with Rosso:

Rosso does inside turns, facing Dan and even takes a couple of steps forward:

Dan allows Rosso to touch him first:

Rosso lets me pet him, but still not sure about things:
 |
Teaching Rosso to lead, Dan applies just enough pressure from behind so I can keep slack in the rope:

Stay tuned!
